To reduce the possibility of damge to the reverse servo seal during assembly, a servo spring retainer has been added. This retainer is identical to the one used for the 1-2 servo spring, and the part number is 8656700. Please make note of this in the 440-T4 section of the service manual on pages 440-T4-26 and 440-T4-67.
Starting January 16, 1984, (Julian date, 016) all 1985 BA and BS model THM 440-T4 transaxles were built with a new servo spring retainer (See Figure 1).
The Julian date is on the transmission identification tag located on the side of the case by the governor. Refer to Figure 2 for decoding of the identification tag.
General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
