J 42640 Steering Column
Anti Rotation Pin
Removal Procedure
Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in the Preface section.
Notice: The front wheels of the vehicle must be maintained in the straight ahead
position and the steering column must be in the LOCK position before disconnecting
the steering column or intermediate shaft. Failure to follow these procedures
will cause improper alignment of some components during installation and result
in damage to the SIR coil assembly.
- Disable the SIR system. Refer to
SIR Disabling and Enabling
in SIR.
- Turn the steering wheel so that the front wheels are pointing straight
ahead.
- Turn the ignition lock cylinder to the lock position and remove the
key.
- Insert J 42640
into the steering column access hole in order to lock the steering column.
This will maintain the correct orientation.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer
to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General
Information.
- Remove the upper intermediate shaft to the lower intermediate shaft
bolt.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Remove the steering column. Refer to
Steering Column Replacement
.
Important: Note the relationship of the upper intermediate shaft to the lower intermediate
shaft and the upper intermediate shaft to the steering column in order to
ensure proper instillation.
- Remove the upper intermediate shaft to the steering column retaining bolt.
- Remove the upper intermediate shaft from the steering column.
Installation Procedure
- Install the upper intermediate shaft
to the steering column.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the upper intermediate shaft to the steering column retaining bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the upper intermediate shaft to the steering column retaining bolt
to 48 N·m (35 lb ft).
- Install the steering column. Refer to
Steering Column Replacement
.
- Raise the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Install the upper intermediate shaft to the lower intermediate shaft.
- Install the upper intermediate shaft to the lower intermediate shaft
retaining bolt.
Tighten
Tighten the retaining bolt to 48 N·m (35 lb ft).
- Lower the vehicle.
- Unlock the steering column by removing J 42640
from the steering column lower trim cover access hole.
- Enable the SIR system. Refer to
SIR Disabling and Enabling
in SIR.
