Circuit/System Description

The steering wheel position sensor identifies the position of the steering wheel. The EBCM monitors the steering wheel position sensor phase A and phase B signal circuits for the VSES.

Conditions for Running the DTC
    • Ignition ON.
    • Ignition voltage is greater than 10 volts.

Conditions for Setting the DTC
    • The EBCM detects the phase A and phase B signals do not correlate.
    • The EBCM detects the calculated steering angle from the steering wheel position sensor does not correlate with the steering angle calculated from the yaw rate.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets
    • The EBCM turns OFF the 5-volt reference circuit.
    • The EBCM disables the VSES for the duration of the ignition cycle.
    • A DIC message and/or a warning indicator may be displayed.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC
    • The condition for the DTC is no longer present.
    • The EBCM clears the history DTC when a current DTC is not detected in 100 consecutive drive cycles.

Diagnostic Aids
    • If the steering wheel position sensor is disconnected, the EBCM will not provide 5-volts to the sensor.
    • A poor ground connection for the EBCM may cause this DTC to set.

Circuit/System Testing
  1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector at the steering wheel position sensor (SWPS).
  2. Ignition OFF for 60 seconds, test for less than 10 ohms between the low reference circuit terminal 2 and ground.
    3. ⇒If greater than the specified range, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the EBCM.
  3. Disconnect the harness connector at the EBCM.
  4. Test for less than 1 volt between the 5-volt reference circuit terminal 1, and ground.
    5. ⇒If greater than the specified range, test the 5-volt reference circuit for a short to voltage.
  5. Ignition OFF, test for infinite resistance between the 5 volt reference circuit terminal 1 and ground.
    6. ⇒If less than the specified value, test the 5 volt reference circuit for a short to ground.
  6. Ignition OFF, test for less than 2 ohms between the 5 volt reference circuit terminal 1 at the steering wheel position sensor harness connector and terminal 25 at the EBCM harness connector.
    7. ⇒If greater than the specified range, test the 5 volt reference circuit for an open/high resistance.
  7. Ignition ON, test for less than 1 volt between the signal circuits listed below and ground.
    8. • Steering Wheel Position Signal A terminal 5
    • Steering Wheel Position Signal B terminal 6
    ⇒If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to voltage.
  8. Ignition OFF, test for infinite resistance between the signal circuit listed below and ground.
    9. •  Signal A terminal 5
    •  Signal B terminal 6
    ⇒If less than the specified value, test the signal circuit for a short to ground.
  9. Test for less than 2 ohms between the signal circuit terminals listed below.
    10. •  Signal A terminal 5 at the steering wheel position sensor harness connector and terminal 39 at the EBCM harness connector.
    •  Signal B terminal 6 at the steering wheel position sensor harness connector and terminal 10 at the EBCM harness connector.
         ⇒If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit for an open/high resistance.
  10. If all circuits test normal, replace the steering wheel position sensor. If the DTC resets replace the EBCM.

Repair Instructions

Perform the Diagnostic Repair Verification after completing the diagnostic procedure.
