The steering column includes the following 3 important
features in addition to the steering function:
|     •  | The steering column is energy absorbing. | 
 
|          | The steering column is designed in order to compress in a front-end
collision. This is intended to lessen the chance of injury to the driver. | 
 
|     •  | The ignition switch and lock are mounted on the column. This allows
the ignition and steering operations to be locked in order to inhibit theft
    of the vehicle. | 
 
|     •  | The multi-function lever provides for control of the following
components: | 
 
|        -  | The headlamp high beams | 
 
|        -  | The windshield washer and wiper | 
 
Important: Use care when removing the column assembly from the vehicle.
The column may be removed, disassembled and assembled with relative
ease. Use only the following specified components:
Tighten the components to the specified torque in order to ensure the
proper energy-absorbing functions.
The following actions may shear off or loosen the plastic fasteners
that maintain column rigidity:
|     •  | Using a steering wheel puller other than the one recommended in
this manual | 
 
|     •  | Striking sharply on the end of the steering shaft lever | 
 
|     •  | Leaning on the assembly | 
 
The steering wheel is wrapped in leather. The steering
wheel has 4 spokes. In addition to providing steering control, the
    steering wheel houses the following components:
|     •  | The inflator module (air bag) | 
 
|     •  | The horn contact assembly | 
 
Important: Use care when removing the steering wheel from the steering column.
Place the steering wheel on a soft cloth in order to avoid tearing or
damaging the leather wrapping.
