Rear Axle Housing Cover and Gasket Replacement 8.6, 9.5 Inch Axles
                    
Removal Procedure
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to 
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
 
- For the 9.5 inch axle, drain the rear axle. Refer to 
Rear Axle Lubricant Replacement.
 
- Remove the rear axle housing cover bolts (1).
 
Note: DO NOT nick or cut the rear axle housing cover gasket.
- Remove the rear axle housing cover (2)  and the gasket (3) from the axle housing. 
 
- If the rear axle housing cover gasket is found to be damaged, DO NOT re-use. Replace with NEW.
 
- Drain the remaining axle lubricant into a suitable container.
 
Installation Procedure
- If the gasket is to be re-used, clean the sealing surfaces of the rear axle housing and the rear axle cover with a suitable cleaner.
 
- Install the rear axle housing cover gasket (3) and the cover  (2) to the rear axle housing.
 
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.
- Install the rear axle housing cover bolts (1) and tighten to 
30 N·m (20 lb ft).
 
- Install the drain plug for the 9.5 inch axle. Refer to 
Rear Axle Lubricant Replacement.
 
- Fill the rear axle with the proper axle lubricant. Refer to 
Rear Axle Lubricant Level Inspection.
 
- Remove the support and lower the vehicle. 
 
                            Rear Axle Housing Cover and Gasket Replacement 10.5 Inch Axle
                    
Removal Procedure
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to 
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
 
- Drain the rear axle. Refer to 
Rear Axle Lubricant Replacement.
 
Note: Discard the axle housing cover bolts. Use NEW only.
- Remove the rear axle cover bolts (1), cover (2), and the gasket (3).
 
- Remove any gasket material from the rear axle housing and/or axle housing cover.
 
Installation Procedure
- Position the axle housing cover (2) and the gasket (3) on the rear axle.
 
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.
- Install the NEW axle housing cover bolts (1) and tighten to 
40 N·m (30 lb ft).
 
- Fill the rear drive axle with the proper fluid. Refer to 
Rear Axle Lubricant Replacement.
 
- Remove the support and lower the vehicle.
