1. Inspect the rack piston teeth (3) for cracks and wear.

1.1.	Run a fingernail horizontally across the teeth surfaces.

1.2.	Replace the rack piston sector shaft and balls (4) if a step was detected.

2. Inspect the rack piston (3) and worm assembly ball track grooves for brinelling or spalling.



3. Replace the input shaft (7) and the rack piston (16) if brinelling or spalling exists.



4. Replace the worm, the valve and the valve housing (1) if brinelling or spalling exists.



5. Inspect the sealing surfaces of the input shaft (7) and the valve for the following conditions:

•

Nicks

•

Steps

•	Heat discoloration

6. Replace the following components if necessary:

•	The input shaft (7)

•	The valve worm assembly

•

The balls




7. Inspect the housing cylinder bore (1). Lengthwise scoring marks are normal.
8. Inspect the housing faces for nicks which would prevent proper sealing.

Replace the gear housing if these nicks are present and cannot be easily removed with a fine-tooth flat file. Do not change the dimensional characteristics.

9. Inspect the roller bearing (12) in the housing for a brinelling or spalling.

Replace the bearing (12) as necessary.

10. Inspect the side cover (4) bushing .

Replace the side cover and bushing assembly (4) if the following conditions exist:

•	Damage is evident.

•	The side cover and bushing assembly clearance exceeds 0.20 mm (0.008 in).

11. Inspect the following components for brinelling and spalling:

•	The bearing areas

•	The sealing areas

•	The sector teeth contact surfaces

12. Run a fingernail edge across the areas in order to detect steps or cracks.
13. Remove any masking tape from the shaft serrations.
14. Inspect for damaged or twisted serrations.
15. Replace the sector shaft (10) as necessary.



16. Inspect the thrust bearing assembly roller for deterioration.
17. Inspect the thrust washer (9) for brinelling, spalling or cracks.



18. Inspect the thrust bearing assembly roller for deterioration.
19. Inspect the thrust washer (12) for brinelling, spalling or cracks.
