Removal Procedure
Tools Required
J 28509-A Sprocket
        Remover
-  Disconnect the battery negative cable from the battery. Refer
to 
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle 
in Engine Electrical.
 
- Remove the air intake duct from the throttle body.
 
- Remove the grille from the vehicle. Refer to 
Grille Replacement 
 in Exterior Trim.
 
- Remove the radiator assembly from the vehicle. Refer to 
Radiator Replacement 
  in Engine
Cooling.
 
- Remove the air conditioning condenser. Refer to 
Condenser Replacement 
 in HVAC.
 
- Remove the upper intake manifold from the engine block. Refer
to 
Intake Manifold Replacement 
.
 
- Remove the lower intake manifold from the engine block. Refer
to 
Intake Manifold Replacement 
.
 
- Remove the valve rocker arm covers from the cylinder head. Refer
to 
Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement 
.
 
- Remove the valve rocker arms from the cylinder head. Refer to 
Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement 
. 
 
- Remove the valve push rods from the engine block.  Refer to 
Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement 
.
 
- Remove the valve lifters
from the engine block.
 
- Remove the crankshaft balancer from the crankshaft. Refer to 
Crankshaft Balancer Replacement 
.
 
- Remove the water pump from the engine block. Refer to 
Water Pump Replacement 
 in Engine
Cooling.
 
- Remove the engine front cover from the engine block. Refer to 
Engine Front Cover Replacement 
.
 
- Remove the crankshaft position reluctor ring from the crankshaft.
Refer to 
Crankshaft Position Sensor Reluctor Ring Replacement 
.
 
- Remove the timing chain and sprockets from the engine block. Refer
to 
Timing Chain and Sprocket Replacement 
.
 
- Use the J 28509-A 
to remove the camshaft sprocket.
 
- Remove the camshaft retainer
bolt and retainer from the engine block.
 
- Install three 5/16 18 bolts 4 to 5 inches long into the
camshaft threaded bolt holes. Use these  bolts as a  handle for the camshaft
 removal.
 
- Pull the camshaft from the engine block. Use care as not to damage
the camshaft bearing. Refer to Camshaft Removal
.
 
- Remove the three 5/16 18 bolts from the camshaft.
 
Installation Procedure
Tools Required
J 22101  Seal Installer
- Install the three 5/16 18 bolts 4 to 5 inches long into
the camshaft threaded bolt holes. Use these bolts as a handle to install the
 camshaft in the engine block.
 
- Coat the camshaft lobes and journals with engine oil supplement
GM P/N 1052367 before installing the camshaft into the cylinder block.
 
- Install the camshaft into
the engine block. Refer to Camshaft Installation
in  Engine Mechancial.
 
- Remove the  three 5/16 18 bolts from the camshaft.
 
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the camshaft
retainer and bolts in the engine block. 
 
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 12 N·m (106 lb in). 
- Use the J 22101 
 to install the crankshaft sprocket.
 
- Install the timing chain and camshaft sprocket to the camshaft.
Refer to Timing Chain and Sprockets Installation
.
 
- Install the camshaft sprocket bolts to the camshaft. 
 
Tighten
Tighten the bolts to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).
- Install the crankshaft position reluctor ring on the crankshaft.

- Install the engine front cover to the engine block. Refer to 
Engine Front Cover Replacement 
.
 
- Install the water pump to the engine block. Refer to
Water Pump Replacement 
in Engine
Cooling.
 
- Install the crankshaft balancer to the crankshaft. Refer to
Crankshaft Balancer Replacement 
.
 
- Install the valve lifters to the engine block. Refer to 
Valve Lifter Replacement 
.
 
- Install the push rods into the engine block. Refer to
Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement 
.
 
- Install the valve rocker arms to the cylinder head. Refer to 
Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement 
.
 
- Install the lower intake manifold to the engine block. Refer to
Intake Manifold Replacement 
.
 
- Install the upper intake manifold to the lower intake manifold.
Refer to 
Intake Manifold Replacement 
.
 
- Install the valve rocker arm covers to the cylinder head. Refer
to 
Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement 
. 
 
- Install the air cleaner duct to the throttle body.
 
- Install the radiator in the vehicle. Refer to 
Radiator Replacement 
in Engine Cooling.
 
- Install the air conditioning condenser to the vehicle. Refer to 
Condenser Replacement 
    in HVAC.
 
- Install the grille on the vehicle. Refer to 
Grille Replacement 
in Exterior Trim.
 
- Install the drive belt on the drive pulleys. Refer to 
Drive Belt Replacement 
.
 
- Connect the battery negative cables to the battery. Refer to 
Battery Cable 
in Engine Electrical.
