Removal Procedure
Tools Required
J 9290-01  Valve Lifter
Remover (Slide Hammer Type)
- Remove the valve rocker arm cover. Refer to 
Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement 
.
 
- Remove the pushrods. Refer to 
Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement 
.
 
- Remove the intake manifold. Refer to 
Intake Manifold Replacement 
.
 
- Remove the valve lifters one at a time. Place the valve lifters in an
organizer rack in order to ensure that the valve lifters are later returned
to the original bore during installation.
 
A stuck valve lifter can be removed using J 9290-01 
.
- Inspect the valve lifter body for scuffing and scouring.
 
- Check the mating bore in the block if the valve lifter body wall
is worn or damaged.
 
- Check the fit of each valve lifter in its mating bore in the block.
If the clearance is excessive, try a new valve lifter.
 
- The valve lifter roller must be smooth and even. If worn, pitted
or damaged, then the mating camshaft lobe should also be checked.
 
Installation Procedure
Important: 
|    •  | Replace the engine oil and the oil filter if new valve lifters
or a new camshaft is installed. Add engine oil supplement GM P/N 1052367
or the equivalent to the crankcase oil. | 
 
|    •  | Replace all of the valve lifters if a new camshaft is installed. | 
 
- Install the valve lifters to the block. Lubricate the valve lifter and
the body with engine oil supplement GM P/N 1052367 or the equivalent.
 
- Install the intake manifold. Refer to 
Intake Manifold Replacement 
.
 
- Install the pushrod. Refer to 
Valve Rocker Arm and Push Rod Replacement 
.
 
- Install the valve rocker arm cover. Refer to 
Valve Rocker Arm Cover Replacement
