Removal Procedure

Caution: This vehicle is equipped with a Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause the following conditions:

•	Air bag deployment

•	Personal injury

•	Unnecessary SIR system repairs

In order to avoid the above conditions, observe the following guidelines:

•	Refer to SIR Component Views in order to determine if you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring.

•	If you are performing service on or near the SIR components or the SIR wiring, disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System.

Disable the SIR system. Refer to Disabling the SIR System .
Turn the ignition switch to the ON position to unlock the steering wheel.

Turn the steering wheel 90 degrees so the side of the SIR module is at the 12 o'clock position in order to gain access to the hole behind the steering wheel.

Insert a screwdriver into the access hole and push the leaf spring to release the notched pin that retains the inflator module.

Turn the steering wheel 180 degrees to gain access to the remaining access hole.
Insert a screwdriver into the remaining access hole and push the leaf spring to release the notched pin that retains the inflator module.

Tilt the top of the inflator module rearward to gain access to the SIR wiring.
Disconnect the SIR lead wire from the clip on the inflator module.
Disconnect the SIR lead wire from the clip on the steering wheel.

Disconnect the connector position assurance (CPA) retainer.
Disconnect the electrical connector.

Caution: When you are carrying an undeployed inflator module:

•	Do not carry the inflator module by the wires or connector on the inflator module

•	Make sure the bag opening points away from you

When you are storing an undeployed inflator module, make sure the bag opening points away from the surface on which the inflator module rests. When you are storing a steering column, do not rest the column with the bag opening facing down and the column vertical. Provide free space for the air bag to expand in case of an accidental deployment. Otherwise, personal injury may result.

Remove the inflator module from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

Align the inflatable restraint module to the steering wheel.

Caution: When you are carrying an undeployed inflator module:

•	Do not carry the inflator module by the wires or connector on the inflator module

•	Make sure the bag opening points away from you

Install the electrical connector.
Install the CPA retainer.
Install the SIR lead wire to the clip on the steering wheel.
Install the SIR lead wire to the clip on the inflator module.
Ensure that the wiring is not exposed or trapped between the inflatable restraint steering wheel module and the steering wheel.

Install the inflator module onto the steering wheel and press the module into the retaining tabs until the module is secured properly in all retaining locations.
Rotate the steering wheel back into the straight position.
Enable the SIR system. Refer to Enabling the SIR System .
