Removal Procedure
Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in the Preface section.
- Disable the SIR system. Refer to 
SIR Disabling and Enabling
 in SIR.
 
Important: Let the SIR coil hang freely after removal.
- Remove the SIR coil. Refer to 
Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Replacement
.
 
- Compress the shaft lock shield assembly using 
J 23653-SIR 
 and
J 42137 
.
 
- Remove the bearing retainer (1) from the steering shaft
assembly.
 
- Discard the bearing retainer.
 
- Remove 
J 23653-SIR 
 and
J 42137 
 from
the steering shaft assembly.
 
- Remove the following parts
from the steering shaft assembly:
 
| 7.1.  | The shaft lock shield assembly (5) | 
 
| 7.2.  | The turn signal cancel cam assembly (4) | 
 
| 7.3.  | The upper bearing spring (3) | 
 
| 7.4.  | The upper bearing inner race seat (2) | 
 
Installation Procedure
- Lubricate the lower brass
surface of the turn signal cancel cam assembly (4) with GM P/N 12377900
(Canadian P/N 10953529).
 
- Lubricate the inner race with GM P/N 12345718 (Canadian P/N 10953516)
 
- Install the following parts onto the steering shaft assembly:
 
| 3.2.  | The upper bearing inner race seat (2) | 
 
| 3.3.  | The upper bearing spring (3) | 
 
| 3.4.  | The turn signal cancel cam assembly (4) | 
 
| 3.5.  | The shaft lock shield assembly (5) | 
 
- Compress the shaft lock
shield assembly using 
J 23653-SIR 
 and 
J 42137 
.
 
- Install the new bearing retainer (1) onto the steering
shaft assembly.
 
- Firmly seat the bearing retainer (1) into the groove on
the steering shaft assembly.
 
- Remove 
J 23653-SIR 
 and 
J 42137 
 from
the steering shaft assembly.
 
Caution: Improper routing of the wire harness assembly may damage the inflatable
restraint steering wheel module coil. This may result in a malfunction of
the coil, which may cause personal injury.
- Install the SIR coil. Refer to 
Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Replacement
.
 
- Enable the SIR system. Refer to 
SIR Disabling and Enabling
 in SIR.
