Removal Procedure
- Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to 
Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection 
 in Engine
Electrical.
 
- Relieve the fuel pressure. Refer to 
Fuel Pressure Relief 
 in Engine Controls.
 
- Drain the engine coolant. Refer to 
Cooling System Draining and Filling 
 in Engine Cooling.
 
- Remove the engine air cleaner assembly. Refer to 
Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement 
 in Engine Controls-3.1L.
 
- Remove the hood. Refer to 
Hood Replacement 
 in Body Front End.
 
- Remove the drive belt. Refer to 
Drive Belt Replacement 
.
 
- Remove the hoses from
the surge tank.
 
- Remove the cruise control module and position the module aside.
 
- Remove the upper engine wiring harness and set the harness aside.
 
- Disconnect the throttle cable.
 
- Disconnect the cruise control cable from the throttle body.
 
- Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to 
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle 
 in General Information.
 
- Remove the starter. Refer to 
Starter Motor Replacement 
.
 
- Remove the A/C compressor with the lines attached. Refer to 
Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement 
 in Heating, Ventilation
and Air Conditioning. Position the compressor aside.
 
- Disconnect and position aside the lower engine wiring harness.
 
- Disconnect the catalytic converter flange from the rear exhaust
manifold. Refer to 
Catalytic Converter Replacement 
 in Engine Exhaust.
 
- Remove the torque converter to flywheel bolts.
 
- Remove the front fender liner. Refer to 
Front Fender Liner Replacement 
 in Body Front End.
 
- Remove the brace that supports the transaxle to the engine. Refer
to 
Transmission Replacement 
 in Automatic
Transaxle 4T40-E/4T45-E.
 
- Remove front transmission mount. Refer to 
Transmission Front Mount Replacement 
 in Automatic Transaxle
4T40-E/4T45-E.
 
- Remove the 2 outer transmission mounting bolts. Refer to 
Transmission Replacement 
 in Automatic Transaxle
4T40- E/4T45-E.
 
- Lower the vehicle.
 
- Disconnect the upper and the lower radiator hoses. Refer to 
Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement 
 and to 
Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement 
 in Engine Cooling.
 
- Disconnect the fuel lines at the quick-connects.
 
- Disconnect the booster from the engine vacuum hoses to the brake.
 
- Disconnect the heater
hoses.
 
- Remove the power steering pump.
 
- Install the engine lifting device.
 
- Remove the engine mount and the adapter. Refer to 
Engine Mount Replacement 
.
 
- Remove the bolts that retain the transaxle to the engine. Refer
to 
Transmission Replacement 
 in Automatic
transaxle 4T40-E/4T45-E.
 
- Remove the engine from the vehicle.
 
- Remove the engine flywheel. Refer to 
Engine Flywheel Replacement 
.
 
- Mount the engine onto a suitable engine stand.
 
Installation Procedure
- Attach the engine lifting device. Remove the engine from the engine
stand.
 
- Install the engine flywheel. Refer to 
Engine Flywheel Replacement 
.
 
- Position the engine in the vehicle and align the engine with the
transaxle.
 
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the upper transaxle mounting bolts.
 
Tighten
Tighten bolts to 90 N·m (66 lb ft).
- Install the engine mount bracket and the engine mount. Refer to 
Engine Mount Replacement 
.
 
- Remove the engine lifting device.
 
- Install the power steering pump to the engine front cover.
 
- Connect the upper and the lower radiator hoses. Refer to 
Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement 
 and to 
Radiator Outlet Hose Replacement 
 in Engine Cooling.
 
- Raise vehicle. Refer to 
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle 
 in General Information.
 
- Install the 2 bolts that mount the outer transaxle to the
engine. Refer to 
Transmission Replacement 
in Automatic Transaxle 4T40-E/4T45-E.
 
- Install the brace between the transaxle and the engine. Refer
to 
Transmission Replacement 
 in Automatic
Transaxle 4T40-E/4T45-E.
 
- Install the right front fender liner. Refer to 
Front Fender Liner Replacement 
in Body Front End.
 
- Install the flywheel to torque converter bolts.
 
- Install the A/C compressor. Refer to 
Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement 
 in HVAC Systems-Manual.
 
- Install the starter. Refer to 
Starter Motor Replacement 
 in Engine Electrical.
 
- Install flywheel inspection cover.
 
- Install the catalytic converter to the rear exhaust manifold.
Refer to 
Catalytic Converter Replacement 
in Engine Exhaust.
 
- Install a new oil filter.
 
- Install the lower engine wiring harness and the retainers.
 
- Lower the vehicle.
 
- Install the heater hoses
to the engine at the quick-connects.
 
- Install the fuel lines at the quick-connects.
 
- Install the upper engine wiring harness and the retainers.
 
- Connect the vacuum hoses.
 
- Connect the cruise control cable to the throttle body.
 
- Connect the throttle control cable.
 
- Install and connect the cruise control module.
 
- Install the drive belt. Refer to 
Drive Belt Replacement 
.
 
- Connect the surge tank hoses.
 
- Install the hood. Refer to 
Hood Replacement 
 in Body Front End.
 
- Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to 
Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement 
 in Engine Controls-3.1L.
 
- Fill the engine coolant. Refer to 
Cooling System Draining and Filling 
 in Engine Cooling.
 
- Fill the crankcase to the appropriate level. Use the recommended
oil. Refer to 
Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement 
.
 
- Start the engine. Inspect the engine for leaks.
 
- Stop the engine. Inspect the fluid levels.
