Steering Wheel Inflatable Restraint Module Replacement Impala

Removal Procedure
- Disable the SIR system.
 Refer to 
Disabling the SIR System 
.
 
- Position the steering wheel to its lowest position, if tilt steering.
 
- On back side of steering wheel are 4 openings for removing
 the driver inflator module.
 
- Turn the steering wheel until 2 of the openings are on
 top.
 
- Adjust and install J 44298 
 into 2 of the holes.
 
Important: Seat the air bag removal tool all the way in to perform properly.
- Push the handle back towards I/P releasing the 2 spring loaded
 fasteners at the same time.
 
- Turn the steering wheel and repeat the same steps for the other
 2 openings.
 
- Pull the module gently
 away from the steering wheel.
 
Important: Note the driver inflator wire routing positions, the redundant control
 routing positions, and the horn wire routing positions for the correct re-assembly.
- Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) (4) from the air
 bag electrical connector.
 
- Rotate the horn contact lead counterclockwise ¼ turn,
 located in the center of the steering wheel.
 
- Remove the horn contact lead (2).
 
- Remove the inflatable restraint steering wheel module (5).
 
- Fully deploy the module before disposal. If the module was replaced
 under warranty, fully deploy and dispose of the module after the required
 retention period. Refer to 
Inflator Module Handling, Shipping, and Scrapping 
.
 
Installation Procedure
- Push in and rotate the horn contact, turning ¼ turn clockwise
 to lock in place.
 
- Connect the inflator module electrical connector and the CPA (4).
 
Important: Route the driver inflator wires, the redundant control wires, and the
 horn wires correctly.
- Align the inflator module fasteners to the steering column fastener
 holes.
 
- Install the module to the steering wheel by pushing on both the
 right and left sides of the inflator module until the retaining springs engage.
 
- Test the operation of the horn. It the horn doesn't work, remove
 the module and inspect the wire connection.
 
- Enable the SIR system. Refer to

Removal Procedure
- Disable the SIR system. Refer to 
Disabling the SIR System 
.
 
- Tilt the steering wheel to the lowest position, if possible.
 
- On back side of the steering wheel are 3 openings for removing
the driver inflator module. Turn the steering wheel until one  of the opening
is straight above the steering column.
 
- Insert a flat-bladed tool into the hole and twist to release the
spring loaded fastener.
 
- Turn the steering wheel and repeat the same steps for the other
2 openings.
 
- Pull the module gently away from the steering wheel.
 
Important: Note the routing of the yellow coil lead wire, the redundant controls
wire, and the horn wire for correct assembly.
- Remove the connector position assurance (CPA) and disconnect the yellow
coil wire lead connector from the module.
 
- Push and rotate the horn contact lead counterclockwise ¼ 
turn. This red lead is located in the center of the steering  wheel.
 
- Remove the horn contact lead.
 
- Remove the steering wheel module.
 
- Fully deploy the module before disposal. If the module was replaced
under warranty, fully deploy and dispose of the module after the required
retention period. Refer to

Installation Procedure
- Push in and rotate the horn contact,
turning ¼ turn clockwise to lock in place.
 
- Connect the yellow coil lead wire to the module electrical connector.
Install the CPA. Verify the connection is locked.
 
Important: Make sure the yellow coil lead wire, the redundant control wire, and
the horn wire are routed correctly.
- Align the inflator module retainers to the steering wheel openings.
Install the module to the steering wheel by pushing on both sides of the inflator
module until the retaining springs engage.
 
- Verify the operation of the horn. It the horn doesn't work, remove
the module and inspect the wire connection.
 
- Enable the SIR system. Refer to
