Tools Required
Removal Procedure
- Remove the transmission assembly. Refer to
Two-Wheel-Drive Transmission Replacement
 or
Four-Wheel-Drive Transmission Replacement
 in Manual Transmission or
Two-Wheel-Drive Transmission Replacement
 or
Four-Wheel-Drive Transmission Replacement
 in Automatic Transmission.

- Remove the clutch and pressure plate on manual transmission equipped
 vehicles. Refer to
Clutch Assembly Replacement
 in Clutch.

- Inspect the ring gear (2). Replace the flywheel if the
ring gear is damaged, cracked or worn.

- Inspect the clutch disc contact surface on manual transmission
equipped vehicles. Replace the flywheel if the surface is damaged or excessively
       worn.

- Measure the flywheel
 face runout using a J 8001
     with a J 26900-13
.
Replace the flywheel if the runout exceeds specifications.

Flywheel Runout
0.2 mm (0.0078 in)
- Mark the flywheel-to-engine
 position.

- Lock the flywheel (1) in place with the J 35271
.

- Remove the 8 flywheel
 retaining bolts.

- Remove the flywheel from the crankshaft.

- Inspect the clutch pilot bushing. Replace if necessary. Refer
 to
Clutch Pilot Bearing Replacement

in Clutch.

- Clean the grease and dirt from the flywheel outer surfaces using
 a suitable solvent.

Installation Procedure
- Align the flywheel-to-engine
marks and install the flywheel (3) to the crankshaft.

Notice: Apply the proper amount of the sealant to the fastener when assembling
this component. Excessive use of the sealant can prohibit the component from
being assembled properly or allow the fastener to loosen. A component or fastener
that is not assembled properly can loosen or fall off leading to extensive
engine damage.
- Apply GM P/N 12345493, or the equivalent,
to the flywheel retaining bolt threads.

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the flywheel retaining bolts to the crankshaft. Use the J 35271
 to lock the flywheel.

Tighten
Cross tighten the 8 flywheel retaining bolts to 70 N·m
 (51 lb ft).
- Install the clutch and pressure plate on manual transmission equipped
 vehicles. Refer to
Clutch Assembly Replacement
 in Clutch.

- Install the transmission assembly. Refer to
Two-Wheel-Drive Transmission Replacement
 or
Four-Wheel-Drive Transmission Replacement
 in Manual Transmission or
Two-Wheel-Drive Transmission Replacement
 or
Four-Wheel-Drive Transmission Replacement
 in Automatic Transmission.
