Makes 🢒 GMC_Truck 🢒 1996 🢒 GMC C Pickup - 2WD 🢒 Transmission/Transaxle 🢒 Automatic Transmission - 4L80-E 🢒 Forward Clutch Assembly Assemble

Tools Required

    • J 21362-1 Inner Seal Protector
    • J 38732-1 Outer Seal Protector
    • J 23327 Spring Compressor
    • J 25018-A Compressor Adaptor
    • J 36850 TRANSJEL®

    Object Number: 31069 Size: SH
  1. Lubricate the piston seal grooves with J 36850 or equivalent.
  2. Lubricate the new piston seals (604 & 605) with DEXRON® III transmission fluid.
  3. Assemble the forward clutch piston inner (605) and outer (604) seals onto the forward clutch piston (606). The seal lips face the bottom of the piston.

  4. Lubricate the clutch housing seal groove with J 36850 or equivalent.
  5. Lubricate the new seal with DEXRON® III transmission fluid.
  6. Assemble the forward clutch piston center seal onto the forward clutch housing with the seal lip facing upward.

    7. Object Number: 31072 Size: SH
  7. Install the J 21362-1 over the forward clutch housing hub.
  8. Place the forward clutch piston (606) inside J 38732-1 and insert the assembly into the forward clutch housing assembly (602).
  9. Push down on and slightly rotate the piston until it is seated.
  10. Remove the tools.

  11. Install the forward clutch spring (607).
  12. Compress the forward clutch spring (607) using the J 23327 and J 25018-A .
  13. Install the forward clutch spring retainer ring (608).
  14. Remove the J 23327 .

    15. Object Number: 31077 Size: SH
  15. Dip the clutch plates in DEXRON® III transmission fluid.
  16. With the inner diameter dish down, install the forward clutch apply clutch plate (609).
  17. Install the steel and composite forward clutch plates (610, 611). Starting with the steel clutch plate, alternate the clutch plates.

    18. Important: The forward clutch hub and thrust washer should not be installed at this time. This will allow easier access in order to perform the forward clutch piston travel check.

  18. Install the direct clutch hub retainer ring (615).
