Tools Required

1. Lubricate clutch piston seals and grooves with DEXRON® III transmission fluid.
2. Install the inner (604) and outer (605) direct clutch piston seals with the seal lips facing down towards the direct clutch housing.



3. Install the direct clutch intermediate seal (622) onto the direct clutch housing (623) with the seal lip facing upward.



4. Install J 21362-1 and J 38732-1 onto the direct clutch housing (623). Lubricate the tools with DEXRON® III transmission fluid.
5. Install the direct clutch piston (619) into the direct clutch housing using a rotating movement until the direct clutch piston is seated.



6. Install the direct clutch spring and the retainer assembly (607).
7. Install the J 23327 and the J 25018-A onto the direct clutch housing (623).
8. Compress the direct clutch spring assembly (607).
9. Install the direct clutch spring retainer ring (608).
10. Remove the tools.



11. Dip all clutches in DEXRON® III transmission fluid.
12. Install the direct clutch apply plate (wave) (609).
13. Install the direct clutch plates (618, 619). Alternate the clutch plates, starting with the steel plate first (5 steel, 5 composite).
14. Install the direct clutch backing plate (617).
15. Install the direct clutch backing plate retaining ring (616).



16. Turn the direct clutch drum (623) over.
17. Assemble the intermediate clutch sprag assembly (624) and races into the outer race (625).
18. Install the intermediate roller clutch outer race (625) with the grooves facing upward:

•	Use the clockwise rotating motion to ease assembly

•	The direct clutch housing should not rotate counterclockwise

19. Assemble the intermediate roller clutch retainer (626).



20. Insert the intermediate roller clutch retainer retaining ring (627) onto the direct clutch housing hub.
21. Use J 38695 to complete the installation of the retaining ring. Rotate counterclockwise while pressing down.
