Engine Will Not Start (Replace Starter Motor Relay and Repair Wire)

Some customers may comment that the engine will not start.

The cause of this condition may be a shorted starter solenoid wire. The wire rubs against the frame bracket and over time may wear through the insulation of the wire resulting in a short to ground. This short may burn out the starter relay.

Replace the starter relay and repair the wire using the procedure listed below.

1. Tilt and secure the cab.



2. Disconnect the starter relay electrical connector and remove the relay (2) from the bracket.
3. Install the new starter relay to the bracket and connect the electrical connector.



4. Inspect the starter solenoid purple wire (1) insulation for damage and repair as required. Refer to Wiring Repairs in the Wiring Systems sub-section of the Service Manual.
5. Secure the wire away from the frame bracket using a tie strap in order to prevent future damage.
6. Lower the cab.
