The generator battery control module (GBCM) and the engine control module (ECM) monitor the generator through the generator field duty cycle signal circuit. The signal is a pulse width modulation (PWM) signal of 128 Hz. Normal duty cycle is 5-99 percent.
| • | The engine is running. |
| • | The engine speed is less than 1,000 RPM. |
| • | DTC B1487 and DTC B1488 are not set. |
The generator field duty cycle signal is less than 5 percent duty cycle for 2 minutes.
| • | The charge indicator turns ON. |
| • | The driver information center (DIC) displays the SERVICE CHARGSYS message. |
| • | The generator field duty cycle signal is greater than 5 percent duty cycle. |
| • | The charge indicator and SERVICE CHARGSYS message will remain ON until the ignition switch is cycled after the DTC is cleared. |

| ⇒ | If the test lamp does not illuminate, test the B+ circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. |
| ⇒ | If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit terminal 2 X1 for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM. |
| ⇒ | If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the ECM. |
| ⇒ | If greater than the specified range, replace the GBCM. |
| ⇒ | If less than the specified range, replace the GBCM. |
| ⇒ | If greater than the specified range, test the signal circuit terminal B for a short to voltage. |
| ⇒ | If less than the specified range, test the signal circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. |
