CAMPAIGN: FUEL FEED & RETURN HOSE/PIPE ASSEMBLIES

MODELS/YEARS: 1987 OLDSMOBILE FIRENZA MODELS EQUIPPED WITH 2.0L LT2 (VIN CODE K) ENGINES

CONDITION

General Motors has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in some 1987 Oldsmobile Firenza models equipped with 2.0L (RPO LT2, VIN Code K) engines. The fuel feed and/or return hose/pipe amemblies could crack or separate, allowing fuel to leak into the underhood area. This condition could ultimately result in an underhood fire without prior warning. Such a fire could, in time, spread to the pasenger compartment and cause injury to any remaining occupants.

VEHICLES INVOLVED

Certain 1987 Oldsmobile Firenza models equipped with 2.0L LT2 (VIN Code K) engines within the following vehicle breakpoints:

Year Series Plant Beginning Through and Including ---- ------ ------ --------- --------------------- 1987 Firenza Leeds Start of Production End of Production

DEALER ACTION

To prevent the possibility of this condition occurring, both the fuel feed and return hose/pipe assemblies will be replaced.

Dealers are to perform this campaign on all involved vehicles at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership from this time forward.

Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used car inventory, or it is in your dealership for service, you are to ensure the campaign correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.

Dealers are to contact owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory and arrange for the campaign correction to be performed.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

1. CAUTION: To reduce the risk of fire and personal injury, it is necessary to relieve fuel system pressure before servicing fuel system components. Have a dry chemical (Class B) fire extinguisher near work area. To relieve the fuel system pressure, do the following:

Remove "Fuel Pump" fuse from fuse block in passenger compartment.

Crank engine - engine will start and run until fuel supply remaining in fuel lines has been consumed. Engage starter for 3.0 seconds to assure relief of any remaining pressure.

Unles this procedure is followed before servicing fuel lines or connections, fuel spray could occur.

2. Disconnect negative battery cable.

3. Use a backup wrench when loosening the screw coupling fittings at the fuel line ends.

4. Disconnect heater iniet hose at bo"om side of manifold for easier fuel line removal.

5. Install new "O"-rings on the chassis fuel line ends (see illustration) with Return Line "O"-ring (Part Number 22516256) and Feed Line "O"-ring (Part Number 22514722). The new fuel line assemblies also contain new "O"-rings for engine end attachment.

6. Install new engine fuel lines (Fuel Feed, Part Number 10106034; and Fuel Return, Part Number 10106035). Avoid any routing that causes kinking or twisting of the lines.

7. Reconnect heater inlet hose and add coolant, if necenary.

8. Secure all fuel line routing clamps.

9. Tighten all fuel line connections to 30 N-m (22 lbs. ft.) torque while using a back-up wrench on fittings.

10. Reinstall fuel pump fuse, reconnect battery cable, start engine and check all previously loosened fuel line connections for possible leaks and check coolant level.

11. Install Campaign Identification Label.

CAMPAIGN IDENTIFICATION LABEL

Each label provides space to print the campaign number. and the five (5) digit dealer code of the dealer performing the campaign. Insert this information with a typewriter or ballpoint pen. When installing label, clean and dry the surface of the radiator support tie bar and apply the campaign label where it is readily visible.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
