General Motors has determined that certain 1987 Oldsmobile Firenza models fail to conform to the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS)105: "Hydraulic Brake Systems." These vehicles might have been assembled with parking brack lever mechanisms which will not properly engage when applied.
In some of these vehicles, the parking brake can be applied and appear to be proplerly engaged and later, when the vehicle is unattended, it could disengage. If the transmission were neither in gear (manual transmission) nor in Park (automatic transmission) the vehicle could unexpectedly roll. In such an instance the vehicle might roll away uncontrolled, which could result in a vehicle crash without prior warning.
To correct this condition, dealers are to replace the parking brake lever assembly as outlined in the service procedure section of this bulletin.
Involved are certain 1987 Oldsmobile Firenza Models within the following VIN breakpoints:
Assembly Plant Beginning Up To And Including -------------- --------- ------------------- Leads (K) Start of Production HK300356
Should a question exist concerning the campaign involvement of a specific vehicle(s) within the breakpoints listed above, dealers should call the Computerized Recall Information System (C.R.I.S) for verification.
Dealers are to service all vehicles subject to this campaign at no charge to owners, regardless of milage, age of vehicle, or ownership, from this time forward.
Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new vehicle inventory, or it is in your dealership for service in the future, you should take the steps necessary to be sure the campaign correction has been made before reselling or releasing the vehicle.
Owners of vehicles recently sold from you new vehicle inventory are to be contacted by the dealer and arrangements made to make the required modification according to instructions contained in this bulletin.

This information may be inserted with a typewriter or ballpoint pen. When installing label, clean the surface of the radiator upper mounting support and apply the campaign label where it is readily visible.

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
