CERTAIN 1988 OLDSMOBILE TOURING SEDAN MODELS
General Motors has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety may exist in some 1988 Oldsmobile Touring Sedan models. A clip on the shifter mechanism inside the console may become dislodged preventing indication of the correct gear under conditions of darkness. Also, there is a possibility this clip could bind part of the shifter mechanism in a way which would prevent the gear detents from operating; hence an inadvertent bump of the shifter could place the shifter in an undesired gear position. Either of these conditions could cause a vehicle crash without prior warning.
Certain 1988 Oldsmobile Touring Sedan models within the following vehicle breakpoints:
Beginning Through and Including --------- -------------------- J4302017 J4311586
Approximately 1300 Touring Sedans were built between the above VIN breakpoints for sale in the United States. Of these, only 430 Touring Sedans will be affected by this product campaign.
Ninety-Eight Regencys and Ninety-Eight Regency Broughams between the above VIN breakpoints are NOT affected.
All vehicles listed on the dealer's campaign printout will require correction as outlined in the Service Procedure section of this bulletin.
Should a question exist concerning the campaign involvement of a specific vehicle(s) within the breakpoints listed above, dealers should call the Computerized Recall Information System (C.R.I.S.) for verification.
Dealers are to replace the Clip, Transmission Shift Indicator Slot.
Dealers are to perform this campaign on all involved vehicles at no charge to owners, regardless of mileage, age of vehicle, or ownership from this time forward.
Whenever a vehicle subject to this campaign is taken into your new or used car inventory, or it is in your dealership for service, you are to ensure the campaign correction has been made before selling or releasing the vehicle.
Dealers are to contact owners of vehicles recently sold from your new vehicle inventory and arrange for the campaign correction to be performed.
Instructions and illustration are based on a technician sitting in the driver's seat.

2. By hand, pull Transmission Control Dial, (1) in illustration, up out of console about 12 mm (1/2 inch). It "snaps" out. Tilt Transmission Control Dial away from opening in console (it is not necessary to disconnect wires).
3. Using a small flat blade screwdriver if necessary, remove Clip, Transmission Shift indicator Slot (3).

4. Reverse Step 2., reinstalling Transmission Control Dial (1), taking care that the pin on the Transmission Control Indicator (2) engages the slot in the Clip (3).
5. Turn on ignition and headlights. Shield the shift indicator with a hand so the gear indicator light may be seen. Move the shift lever between gear positions and confirm that Transmission Control Indicator pin is engaged in the slot of the Clip (3).

General Motors bulletins are intended for use by professional technicians, not a "do-it-yourselfer". They are written to inform those technicians of conditions that may occur on some vehicles, or to provide information that could assist in the proper service of a vehicle. Properly trained technicians have the equipment, tools, safety instructions and know-how to do a job properly and safely. If a condition is described, do not assume that the bulletin applies to your vehicle, or that your vehicle will have that condition. See a General Motors dealer servicing your brand of General Motors vehicle for information on whether your vehicle may benefit from the information.
